Damaged Books: First Practical Steps, 18 October 2011, London

Do you look after books and documents? Do you want to learn more about how they can be damaged and how you can prevent this? Do you want to practice making a wrapper to protect a book? This training day is aimed at librarians and archivists.
The day starts with an overview of the different types of damage, how these can be caused and how damage can be prevented. Subsequent sessions focus on decision making for treating damaged books and making protective wrappers.
Previous attendees commented that they gained “Practical information about damage and the realisation that I should constantly monitor the condition of items on the shelves”; and learnt “Practical skills in tape tying and producing Melinex covers.”
The day is led by accredited conservator, Caroline Bendix whose clients include the National Trust and English Heritage.
Cost: £100 + VAT including lunch and refreshments (£75 + VAT for members of Research Libraries UK)

Introduction to Preservation, 25 October 2011, London
Do you look after books and documents? Do you want to learn more about ways to protect and preserve them? This training day is aimed at those who are new to the preservation of library and archive collections and would like to learn more.
The day starts with an overview of preservation, risk management and prioritization. Subsequent sessions focus on storage of collections; how to handle items; emergency response and digital preservation.
Previous attendees found that the day gave a “good overview of issues - feel generally better informed.” and helped with “options for storing material, key environmental issues, best handling methods. Lots more little bits of very helpful information.”

Planning approaches to digitisation training day, 4 November 2011, London
Are you planning a digitisation project? Do you want to learn more about how to approach this? This training day includes presentations and case studies on planning for digitisation; how to select materials for digitisation; and preservation issues.

Writing and Using a Preservation Policy, 17 November 2011, Edinburgh
Do you need to develop or revise a preservation policy as part of your long-term collections management strategy? Would you like guidance on what to consider and include? This training day is aimed at those who are new to the preservation of library and archive collections and would like to learn more.
The day starts with an overview of preservation policies, what to include and how to format a policy. Subsequent sessions include case studies on implementing policies and a writing exercise.
Previous attendees found that the day helped with“distinctions between policy, strategy, guidelines and action plans”; and “Practical information regarding how to develop an effective policy and what to include/exclude from it.”
The day is led bypreservation and collections management consultant Jonathan Rhys-Lewis (ACR).

Actions for access: tools to prioritize within collection care, 9 December 2011, London
In these times of squeezed budgets we are all trying to do more with less, but we still need to care for our collections and continue to provide access to them. So how do you decide between competing demands on your time and budget within collection care activities? This training day looks at different tools you can use to help you to review these competing demands and establish priorities in collection care in your own organisation.
Previous attendees commented that they gained a ‘good overview of different tools with common sense approach to how to use them.’ and learnt ‘Lots about different types of surveys, pros and cons. Emphasis on planning, thinking ahead and working with colleagues.’

Digitisation practicalities training day, 12 December, London
Are you setting up a digitisation project? Do you want to learn more about the practicalities of equipment and handling books and documents during digitisation? This training day includes presentations on what to consider when sourcing equipment; preparing books for digitisation; handling during digitisation; outsourcing digitisation and dealing with digital images.
Previous attendees commented that they gained a ‘Better understanding of digitisation, knowledge of dealing with images and the importance of metadata.’ and learnt more‘About equipment for digitisation.’

Disaster response and salvage, 16 January 2012, London and 7 February 2012, Manchester
Do you want to know more about planning for emergency situations? Would you like information on practical steps you can take when responding to situations? This intensive half-day course focuses on preparing for disaster response and salvage. The course uses experience of responding to real incidents to demonstrate how planning can minimise the impact of emergencies in libraries and archives. With reference to case studies, the course includes strategies for dealing with damage, an emergency decision-making exercise and a hands-on salvage exercise.
Previous attendees commented that they had learnt ‘How much there is to think about when dealing with a disaster and how to prioritise actions.’ and ‘Importance of preparedness. Tips for emergency kits and for small scale incidents. How to assess what we can cope with ourselves and when to call in help.’
The day is led by Emma Dadson of Harwell Document Restoration Services.
