RLUK Minimum Standards for Bibliographic Records (Roman scripts)

A. Rare Books/Special Collections material (pre-1800 imprints)

A1. Required data elements
Description

Title and statement of responsibility. All relevant fields and subfields, excluding 245 $z (GMD)

(UKMARC 245, 248; MARC21 245).
Edition area. All relevant subfields (UK/MARC21 250).
Publication, distribution area (UK/MARC21 260 $a,$b,$c).
Physical description area. All relevant subfields including illustration, size and format (UK/MARC21 300).
Series area. All relevant subfields (except $w ISSN of series) (UK/MARC21 440, 490).

Note area (UK/MARC21 5XX)

The decision about the notes included in any given record will inevitably have a subjective element.

However, regard inclusion of the following, when relevant, as necessary:

Notes on edition and publication history (UKMARC 503; MARC21 500);
Notes on contents of multi-part items with separate titles (UK/MARC21 505);
Notes on individuals or organisations responsible for or connected with the work (UKMARC 508; MARC21 500 or 545);
Notes on source of title and variations in title (UKMARC 514; MARC21 500 or 246);
Notes on accompanying material and supplements (UKMARC 525; MARC21 525 or 770).
