Research Libraries UK and the Arcadia Fund invite you to a screening ofPaywall: The Business of Scholarship
The screening will be held on Wednesday 30 January from 18:00 at The Knowledge Centre, British Library (the screening will begin at 18:30).
Paywall: The Business of Scholarship is a documentary which focuses on the need for open access to research and science, questions the rationale behind the $25.2 billion a year that flows into for-profit academic publishers, examines the 35-40% profit margin associated with the top academic publisher Elsevier and looks at how that profit margin is often greater than some of the most profitable tech companies like Apple, Facebook and Google.
Following the screening will be a discussion of some of the issues raised in the film and audience Q&A with a panel including:
- Jason Schmitt, Producer / Director of Paywall
- Chris Banks, Director of Library Services, Imperial College
- Rachel Bruce, Head of Open Research, UKRI
- Catriona J. MacCallum, Director of Open Science, Hindawi
The evening will close with a drinks reception.
This event is open to all and is free to attend. The screening and reception are made possible through the generosity of the Arcadia Fund, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin.
