RLUK is one of 50 signatories to a letter calling for the government to act swiftly to implement key reforms to copyright legislation. The letter, addressed to Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, was convened by the Libraries and Archives Copyright Alliance.

The letter argues that current UK copyright laws “put our cultural heritage at risk and hold back scientific discovery.” Implementing the recommendations from the Hargreaves Report “will enable this country’s wonderful cultural heritage…that sit in our great libraries and museums to be digitally preserved. By allowing researchers to use computers to analyse research outputs, instead of having manually to cross reference paper copies, the recommendations will accelerate medial and scientific advancement”.
